Igreja das Chagas is a religious and historical landmark located in central Lisbon, Portugal. Built in 1784, the church was constructed by the António José da Costa, a notable contemporary of Prime Minister Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, all in the designs of the then Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, José de Sa. The Neo-Baroque façade, which is covered in whitewashed stucco, is highlighted with natural tiles, featuring a very intricate wooden carving of the main altar inside. Igreja das Chagas History The church was originally commissioned by a Portuguese aristocrat, Francisco José da Costa, who was a devotee of Saint Francis Xavier, to whom a chapel was dedicated. The official inauguration of Igreja das Chagas in 1784 was a cause for celebration for the Portuguese people, with a large parade and a mass conducted by the same Cardinal that had orchestrated its construction. Igreja das Chagas Facts The church features six stores, with seven chapels lined up along the walls around a central nave, and one more for the altar. The interior of Igreja das Chagas is adorned with marble sculptures and numerous paintings, depicting scenes from the life of Christ. The altar is of an elaborately-carved dark wood, and is surrounded by a high gilded stone altarpiece relief. Igreja das Chagas Services Today, Igreja das Chagas still conducts weekly masses and services as it has done since its opening in 1784. It also housed a number of auxiliary services including a primary school and an academy of music. The surrounding neighbourhood of Mouraria is well-known for its festivals and devotion to the Church, with its involvement in the famous Feira da Ladra vintage market.
