Church of São Pedro (Belazaima do Chão) is the oldest church in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. It is located in the small town of Belazaima do Chão, in the Evora district in southeastern Portugal. The building was erected in the 12th century. The original structure is Gothic style, though renovations in the 18th century changed the interior to a more neo-classical style. History The church was originally built between 1150 and 1160 on the orders of the ruling Count of Belazaima and the Bishop of Evora. Facts The church is built entirely of limestone and its most prominent features are the Gothic entrances, decorated with stones and sculptures. Inside, the church has three chapels, which have kept much of their neo-classical style. There is a large central dome which is decorated with intricate frescos. The oldest fresco in the church is located on its ceiling and is believed to date back to the mid-13th century.
