History:
Basílica dos Mártires was built between 1867 and 1871 to commemorate the bravery of the Portuguese soldiers in the War of 1811, during which a large portion of the Portuguese army led by General William Carr Beresford fought against the French military occupation. The basilica was later inaugurated in 1886 in the presence of King Luís I. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

The building's main chapel was designed by the Portuguese architect José da Costa e Silva. Its walls feature artwork by Silvestre Silvestri, which depicts the military deeds of the Portuguese soldiers, as well as stained-glass windows by the French artist Alexandre de Haes. The crypt of the basilica contains the remains of the 296 fallen soldiers from the War of 1811.
Services:
Basílica dos Mártires is open to visitors, and hosts weekly masses, as well as annual events such as the Remembrance Mass on June 10th, and the Mass of the Departed Souls on November 2nd.
