Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Leiria is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Leiria, Portugal. It is the seat of the Diocese of Leiria-Fátima, and is dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. This cathedral was built in the 19th century and is a Gothic Revival building. It is one of the most important and the most iconic monuments in the city of Leiria. History The building of the cathedral, which began in 1882, was interrupted twice (in 1885 and, more significantly, in 1890). On October 5, 1910, Archbishop Carlos Macedo directed the laying of the first stone of building’s interior and the project was finally completed in 1952. Facts The cathedral has a cruciform plan with three naves and can accommodate up to 4,000 people. It also features four spires and a large dome. Inside there are three pulpits and four gothic altars. It is a good example of neo-gothic architecture. Services The cathedral offers several services such as mass, meditations, concerts, and other spiritual activities. Visitors can also take a tour to learn more about the building's history. It is open to the public six days a week (Monday through Saturday).
