San Agustin Church was founded by the Order of St. Augustine, who brought the Roman Catholic faith to the Philippines. Construction of the church began in 1586 and was completed sometime in 1598. The construction cost was initially borne by a wealthy Mexican philanthropist named Diego Aduarte, who retired in the Philippines and outlived the church’s construction. The church has since undergone numerous renovations and restorations due to natural disasters, wars and age. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Philippines.
