The PICC was originally founded in 1902, after Filipinos declared their independence from Spain. His Eminence Gregorio Aglipay, a Filipino prelate of the Roman Catholic Church, declared himself Ecclesiastical Head of the Philippine Independent Church, rejected the authority of the Roman pontiff, and entered into a full breach with the Roman Catholic Church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Philippines.
