The Independent Church of Filipino Christians, founded by Gregorio Aglipay, is a nationalist Philippine Christian Church that originated from the Roman Catholic Church and the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, which was founded in 1902 by priests who opposed Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. It is rooted in Aglipay’s initiation of a movement in 1902 promoting a Filipino nationalist brand of Christianity and independence from Spanish and American colonialism. Currently, there are over 1,000 churches across the country led by priests and presided over by bishops, with a presence in every province in the Philippines. Its primary area of influence is the Ilocos region (Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur), where it is the second largest non-Catholic Christian denomination in the region. The ceremonial teaching of the church is firmly rooted in the Filipino nationalist spirit, a set of values that encourages Filipino Christian living and ministry.
