Brief History:
Al Wisarat Mosque is one of the oldest standing mosques in the city of Muscat, the capital of Oman. It is located in a densely populated area of the city, near the Grand Mosque. The mosque was built during the reign of Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Saeedi (1778-1802), during the early 19th century. It was built in an Islamic style, with white-washed walls and a tiled roof. The walls of the mosque are decorated with calligraphy and tiling, and the interiors feature intricate woodwork and painted ceilings. The mosque currently holds weekly community prayers for men and women. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
Al Wizarat Mosque was constructed in 1991 in the Sultanate of Oman. It is an Omani Islamic-style mosque with an eclectic mix of byzantine and neo-classical influences. The mosque is recognised for its unique mix of traditional and modern styles, as well as being the only mosque in the Sultanate of Oman to have a fountain in its entrance courtyard. The main structure of the mosque is built of beige concrete blocks and features a 60 metre (197 foot) tall octagonal minaret and an 18 metre (59 foot) high dome. The minaret is adorned with ceramic tiles featuring calligraphic inscriptions and bell-like designs. The interiors of the mosque also feature intricate wood carvings, including prayer mihrabs and chandeliers. One of the defining features of the mosque is its courtyard which is surrounded by a water-filled fountain. Al Wizarat Mosque also includes a state-of-the-art sound system, air-conditioning, and a grand bazaar with a wide array of cafes and shops. It also includes dedicated prayer rooms for women, as well as a large library dedicated to Islamic literature. The mosque also boasts community prayer rooms located in two underground floors as well as three other prayer rooms located at the entrance and the left and right wings of the main building.
