Brief History:
is that it was set up in 1965 by Sultan Qaboos bin Said and is now the largest mosque in Oman and the second largest in the Middle East. It can accommodate up to 15,000 worshippers. It is unique in its architecture which is a mixture of Islamic, Persian, and Arabic styles, and houses a prayer hall, lecture hall, library, two museums, a catering centre, and two lecture rooms. The mosque also features a library of Islamic literature, a modern conference hall and a ladies prayer and education hall. It is a vital part of the country's religious, societal and cultural life. The Al Rawdah West South Central Mosque in Oman is an example of traditional Islamic architecture and is one of the most iconic mosques in the area. The building consists of a rectangular prayer hall in its center, surrounded by a range of supporting rooms, which are all accessed from a central courtyard. The main prayer hall is surrounded by two minarets on either side, while the sides of the building are adorned with inviting domes and intricate Islamic patterns and motifs. Inside the prayer hall, the walls and floor are adorned with exquisite Islamic tiles and marble. The Mosque also features an impressive marble pulpit (minbar) and fountain (sabil).
