Al Ayn West Mosque in Oman was built in 2017 and was designed by Coast Architects. The project was initiated with the goal of creating a space that would provide worshippers with a serene and holy environment, while at the same time incorporate modern construction techniques and materials to create an iconic, aesthetically pleasing design. The mosque stands out from its surroundings with its modern contemporary design, featuring a two-tiered structure in an “L” shape. The primary materials used in the mosque are stainless steel, glass, marble, and sandstone. These materials create a sleek and modern design that is truly elegant and captivating. The mosque is surrounded by a tall, white wall, which offers privacy and tranquility. The building itself consists of a large central courtyard and a long rectangular prayer hall, divided into two by a mezzanine level. Large windows provide natural light in both levels, while the marble clad walls of the prayer hall are adorned with Islamic geometric art on its walls and its glass stained dome. Inside, a thin marble mezzanine provides a transition space between the main level and the concrete roof, which is the main source of light. The prayer hall also features a grand arched entrance and an intricate arched ceiling. The exterior of the mosque features a soothing green marble cladding, as well as an arched entrance to the main courtyard. The green marble is intended to be a calming reminder of the natural environment and of the Islamic gardens that were inspired by the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Along with the exterior design, the surrounding landscaping is also designed to give the space an added sense of serenity. The Al Ayn West Mosque was designed to stand as a symbol of modernity and respect for the Islamic faith, while still maintaining the traditional style of architecture of the country.
