Construction of the mosque began 2 years prior under the supervision of His Excellency Sheikh Said bin Ali Al Ma'awil and a team of local craftspeople and engineers. The mosque was designed to harmoniously combine modern and traditional elements, paying homage to the ancient Omani architectural heritage. The Al Ma'awil North Central East South Mosque in Oman is a traditional Omani architectural style mosque featuring a large white dome and four minarets in the four cardinal directions. It is composed of white and yellow stone with the dome and minarets covered with intricate geometric patterns on plaster and glazed tile. Inside the mosque features an assembly area for the faithful, a mihrab (a recess in the wall of a mosque that marks the direction of prayer to Mecca) and a court for ablutions.
