Brief History:
Al Qalhat Mosque is located in the ancient city of Qalhat in Muscat Governorate, Oman. It is the oldest surviving mosque in the country, dating back to the 12th century. The mosque is made of coral stone and is stepped in a typical Omani design. It has a simple rectangular prayer hall and can accommodate around thirty worshipers at a time. The mosque was built by Imam Sultan bin Saif bin Malik Al Khuzami, a ruler of the Al Khuzami dynasty who reigned in Qalhat from the 11th to early 12th century. After the decline of Qalhat in 1335, the mosque fell into disrepair. In 1977, it was renovated and is now a major tourist attraction in the region. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
Al Qalhat Mosque is a historic mosque located in the city of Al Qalhat in the Sultanate of Oman. It is the oldest known mosque to date in the country, and is believed to have been built in the year 980 AD. The mosque is noted for its impressive architecture, which combines traditional Islamic and Omani features, and is considered to be a great example of the region's Aboriginal architecture. The structure of the mosque is made of Omani coral stone, and is octagonal in shape, with a main central dome that rises to a height of fifty feet. Other features include two corner towers, pointed arches along the roof, and a circular platform in the centre. Inside the mosque, there is a single main prayer hall, as well as a courtyard that serves as a gathering place for worshippers. In addition, the mosque is surrounded by intricately carved stone walls and several shrines dedicated to local saints. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
