Brief History:

Al Qarn South West Mosque is a mosque located in the western part of the city of Muscat, the capital of Oman. It is generally known as the ‘Al Qarn’ Mosque and is one of the oldest mosques in Oman. The mosque was built in 1232 by Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al-Kalbani, a relative of Imam Ahmed Bin Muhammad Al-Khalili, from the Al-Kalbani clan of Sohar. The mosque was originally built as a single-storey building with a central court and six internal arches, but was later expanded with the addition of four more arches by the middle of the 18th century. The additions to the Al Qarn Mosque included two floors with a pitched roof, and a separate main hall at the entrance of the mosque. The original structure of the mosque is today only visible in the four corners of the building’s inner court as well as in the upper part of the mosque, where a prayer niche (‘mihrab’) is still in place. This mihrab is highly decorated and is one of the highlights of the mosque. The mosque is also adorned with various ornamental carvings and decorations, including glazed tiles and intricately carved woodwork. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
