The Al Mawalih East Mosque in Oman is an ancient mosque, built in the late 13th century. It is a Sunni mosque, and is one of the oldest surviving mosques in the region. The mosque is built in the traditional Omani style of architecture, made up of a large open-air courtyard surrounded by four small prayer chambers. The central chamber is the largest and most grand, featuring elaborate facades, carved stone pillars, and intricate wooden ceilings. The other chambers are simple in comparison, with minimal decoration. The courtyard features stone pathways leading to the four prayer chambers. There are also other pathways leading to the ablution (washing) area and the mehrab or mihrab (a niche in the wall that marks the qibla direction, the direction Muslims should turn to for prayer). Additionally, the mosque features a number of minarets and domes, and is said to have been built of local coralstone. The mosque was restored in 2009, and although the original style has been retained, some modern elements have been added, such as air-conditioning.
