The Al Khuwair North Mosque is a unique example of contemporary Islamic architecture. Built in during 2015-2017 in Al Khuwair, Muscat, capital city of the Sultanate of Oman, the majestic building blends the spirit of traditional Omani architecture with the latest technologies and materials to create a modern structure perfectly adapted to the country’s climate and environment. The mosque is 27 meters tall with a total area of more than 4,000 m2 and can house up to 4,500 worshippers. The mosque’s facade is composed of a series of columns of different diameters in a special arrangement known as a façade articulation. The façade is made up of glazed ceramic tiles reminiscent of traditional Islamic architecture and a central metal dome which is decorated with intricate geometric patterns and Arabic script, serving both as a visual feature and a light source. Internally, the mosque includes a main prayer hall, a sanctuary, a Quran lecture hall and a library. The ceiling features elegant cross vault system and is specially designed to dissipate and absorb sound to ensure perfect acoustics. The main prayer hall has a magnificent gold-plated mihrab, made of ornately carved marble, which points to the direction of Mecca.
