It is one of the oldest and most iconic mosques in Oman, having been built in 1892 AD by Sheikh Ali bin Sulaiman al-Jamali. It is also known as the Great Mosque of al-Jami and is listed as a National Monument of the Sultanate. The most outstanding feature of the mosque is the typical Omani style minbar (religious podium) made of fragrant sandalwood, which dates back to 19th century. The mosque is built of gypsum and limestones from the nearby hills and features a unique and beautiful blend of smooth carvings, aesthetic design and intricate artwork. The Al Jami West Mosque in Oman was built in the late 17th century and is an example of traditional Omani architecture. The inimitable design of the mosque features a prominent white-domed minaret and four overlapping arches. Its exterior is covered in a unique chiaroscuro painting of intricate geometric designs in blue, green, and yellow which forms a vibrant contrast against the jagged hills of Muscat. Inside, the mosque has a spacious prayer hall with multiple arches and an octagonal cupola crowned with a glass dome that filters in natural light.
