Brief History:
The Koutoubia Mosque is one of the most famous landmarks in Marrakech, Morocco. It was built in the mid-12th century under the reign of the Almohad sultan Yaqub al-Mansur. The mosque is located on the west side of Jemaa el-Fnaa, the main square in the old city. The Koutoubia Mosque is the largest and most recognizable mosque in Marrakech and is an important symbol of the city. It is famous for its minaret, which stands 70 meters tall and is decorated with motifs of the calligraphy of the Quran. Koutoubia Mosque, also known as Jami' al-Kutubiyya, is located in Marrakech, Morocco. The mosque was built during the late 12th century by the Almohad ruler Abd al-Mumin, and is the largest and most famous mosque in Marrakech. It is considered one of the city’s most iconic monuments and is one of the most important religious buildings in the region. The mosque is constructed with a leveled courtyard that is arcaded in three sections. The arches in the central section are stuccoworked and the others are merely outlined with a zigzag pattern of brickwork. At the center of the courtyard lies a pool for ablutions and a beautiful marble fountain. The most striking features of Koutoubia Mosque are its minaret and stunning ornamentation. The minaret is square-shaped and is topped with a copper spire and crescent moon, a traditional Islamic symbol. Its façade is decorated with repeating geometric designs and ornamented with the calligraphy of verses from the Quran. The interior of the mosque features large kufic arabesques on its walls, intricately carved wooden ceilings, and colorful tilework. The mihrab is also decorated with turquoise tiles.
