Brief History:

Jamaa El Jedid Mosque is one of the most important mosques in Meknes, a city renowned for its numerous mosques, and the older Jamaa El Jedid Mosque is located inside the Medina. This mosque is said to have been constructed somewhere between the 17th and 18th centuries. Its large prayer hall includes six domes and a square minaret. Its floor features colorful tiles with simple geometric shapes and it has been renovated from time to time, which explains why the mosque has managed to keep most of its original features. Inside the mosque, you can find several painted panels which depict famous scenes from the life of the Prophet Muhammad, and the decoration is quite unique when compared to the rest of the Moroccan mosques. Jamaa El Jedid Mosque is also said to have been used by important political figures, such as the Sultan Ismail, who had a part of the mosque dedicated to him. Architecture:

The architecture of Jamaa El Jedid, or the "New Mosque", in Meknes, Morocco is representative of the late-Almohad period, dating back to around the late 16th century. The mosque is built in the traditional style of building associated with the Maghreb region. Its square plan and octagonal minaret set the tone for the building, which features a large central courtyard surrounded by a variety of arched halls, arcades, chambers, and a symmetrical nave of mihrab and five iwans. The structure of the building highlights the skill and craftsmanship of its builders, with intricately carved stone and wood, and intricately decorated terra cotta tiles adorning the building. The walls of the mosque are constructed from pinkish-white stone blocks, while the roof is made of wood and laid on a series of small, open cupolas, all topped with a tall central cupola. Highlights of the building include the mihrab and minbar, as well as the arcades (izdibad) and the trabeation, both of which are composed of polychrome elaborate tiling with intricate geometric and floral patterns.
