Built in the 11th century, it was initially part of a fortified palace complex known as the Dar El Kebir. The site was originally part of a Madrasa, or Islamic school, and demonstrates the importance of multicultural history in the region. It is considered an important example of Almohad architecture and today is an active mosque that offers a place of worship for both visitors and local Muslims. The Jamaa El Kebir Mosque is an important religious structure located in the heart of the city of Meknes, in Morocco. The mosque was built in 1737 by Moulay Ismail, under the direction of a renowned architect from Fez. The mosque is characterized by its monumental Mihrab, ornate doorways, and vast courtyard. The Mihrab is supported by 16 monumental piers elaborately decorated with stalactite plasterwork and polychrome tiles. The entrance to the prayer hall is adorned with a wide arch with intricate stucco decorations, and the door of the prayer hall is framed with an octagonal arch decorated with blue and green tiles. The courtyard of the mosque is surrounded by two rows of arches that form a large portico, and it is often called the "Paradise of Meknes". This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
