Founded in 1892, St. Nicholas Church was initially quite small and served mainly the missionaries, fur traders, and Native Alaskans of the region. The church was led by two priests, Fathers Sebastian and Sergius, and by 1895, the community had grown to nearly 100 members. In 1919, the Church was expanded and consecrated as a cathedral.
