St. Mary Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Louisville, Kentucky. It was established in 1841 by the first Catholic bishop of Louisville, Martin John Spalding. It is the second oldest Catholic church in the city and has played an important part in the religious and social life of the community for over 175 years. The origins of St. Mary Church date back to the city’s earliest Catholic settlers. They established a regular worship service at a small house of worship at what would eventually become the cornerstone of St. Mary Church. In 1841, Bishop Spalding established the parish and subsequently built the first permanent building in 1845. This building was replaced by the existing church in 1877.
