St George's Basilica In Malta: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The site of St. George's Basilica was originally the place of court ceremonies of the Bohemian kings in the 10th century. It was later used as the home of the rector of the Prague chapter for a short period. In 1020, a wooden church was built on the site, which was later restored and replaced by a Romanesque-style church in the 12th century. In 1344, a larger Gothic church was commissioned on the site to replace the Romanesque structure. This church has remained largely unchanged for centuries, although it was damaged and renovated in 2009. St. George's Basilica This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Malta.
