The original Our Lady of Grace Chapel was established in 1886 by the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, in what was then considered the rural backwoods of Hoboken. The Chapel was a humble wooden structure with a spire reaching up into the sky. The chapel had a unique and singular purpose in Hudson County: to serve as a place of prayer, meditation, and religious instruction for the Italian-American population of Hoboken. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Malta.
