History:

The first recorded Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem was Bishop Juvenal of Jerusalem in 451 AD. In 1099, after the conquest of Jerusalem by the Crusaders, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem was established and the Greek Orthodox Patriarch was deposed. After the Ottoman conquest of Jerusalem in 1515, the Ottoman Sultan Selim I restored the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate and granted it full autonomy and the right of succession. Since then, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem has continued to exist, despite periodic disputes and political upheavals. In 1847, control of the Patriarchate was transferred to the Ottoman Empire, where it remained until its revocation in 1925. During this period, the Patriarchal See of Jerusalem operated under the authority of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. In 1949, a compromise was worked out between the two powers, which gave the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem its present autonomy, including the right to name its own patriarch and to choose its members. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jerusalem.
