History:

According to tradition, a church first stood at the site of Shepherds Field during the 4th century. It is believed to have been built between 327 and 333 by Constantine I and is thought to have been the first church in the region. It is believed that the original structure may have been destroyed following the Persian invasion of 614 and no structural remains of the original church are known to exist. The present Church of Shepherds Field was erected by Franciscan monks in the 18th century. The church was built using stones of various sizes in order to replicate the ruins of the original 4th century structure. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jerusalem.
