The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, Jerusalem is located on Mount Zion and has a long and distinguished history. It was built in the Holy Land during the Crusader period when the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem was established. It is believed to have been established by the Knights Hospitaller. It is the only Catholic Church in Jerusalem that has survived without alteration since that period. History:

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows was probably originally constructed by the Knights Hospitaller in the 12th century. It was reconsecrated in 1423 by the Patriarch of Jerusalem, who rededicated it to Our Lady of Sorrows. The original church was restored in 1818 by the Franciscan Order and has remained in their possession since that time. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jerusalem.

The most famous feature of the church is the miraculous baptismal font, the Lachrymator, which was used to baptise St. John the Baptist. The font is said to have been used to wash away the tears of Mary, mother of Jesus, during the Passion. The marble statuary surrounding the font depicts Jesus’ seven sorrows: the Prophecy of Simeon, the Flight to Egypt, the Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple, the Meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross, Mary at the Foot of the Cross, the Tomb of Jesus, and the Assumption of Mary into Heaven.
