History:

The church is believed to have been a site of Christian worship since the Byzantines built the original Church of Saint John the Baptist in the 4th century CE. This was replaced by a Crusader church in the 12th century CE. However, after the period of Crusader control of the region came to an end in 1291, the church fell into disrepair. It wasn’t until 1720 when Franciscan friars took control of the church that it was restored and began to be used as a house of worship. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jerusalem.
