History:

The Paris Foreign Missionary Society was founded in 1659 to spread Catholicism around the world. The society first came to Japan in 1836 as part of a larger effort to Christianize the country. Shitsu Catholic Church was officially established in 1887, and it served as the primary school for Catholic education in Tokyo. During this time, the church was used as the “headquarters” of Catholicism in Japan. In the 1930s, priests of the Paris Foreign Missionary Society withdrew from Japan due to increasing secularism and government opposition.
