History:

The Catholic Uozu Church has a long and colorful history. It was established in 1893, when the first priest in Uozu, Father Anjiro Sato, arrived from Osaka. Although Father Sato had initially founded a Shrine for the people of Uozu, the Church of Saint Francis Xavier was opened a short time later by Father Antonio Aramazd, who was sent as a missionary from the United States and served in Uozu from 1893 to 1896. He is largely credited with establishing the Church and setting it on its current path of growth. Since that time, the Church of Saint Francis Xavier has been a presence in the community of Uozu. In the middle of the 20th century, the Church was renovated and expanded, and it continues to serve the community to this day. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Japan.
