The Istiqlal Mosque Pekanbaru - Pekanbaru is one of the oldest mosques in Pekanbaru, a city in Indonesia. The mosque was built in 1945 and has been continually maintained over the decades. There is an interesting story behind the mosque’s name: it was reportedly named “Istiqlal” which means “independence” in Arabic, in honor of the independence of Indonesia from Dutch colonial rule. Architecture:
The Istiqlal Mosque of Pekanbaru is an example of modern Islamic architecture. The design of the mosque was created by architect Ismail Nawang Nurjaman and is a part of the development project initiated by the city's local government and Pekanbaru's Development Planning and Investment Board. Built in 2020, the mosque is situated in the downtown area of Pekanbaru. The mosque’s design is a combination of traditional Islamic architecture and modern design, with white interiors and light-coloured exteriors that incorporate Islamic motifs and geometric shapes. The mosque has four entrances, one for each direction from which the worshippers can enter the building. The mosque’s main entrance is in the form of an elaborate stainless steel dome, on top of which sits a 3-dimensional dome-like sculpture which is highlighted in red and in the middle of this sky-reaching dome is an open book with Arabic words “Shalat ikhlas” which translates to "pray sincerely" in English. The architecture of Istiqlal Mosque is complemented by its beautiful green surroundings and natural environment. The mosque’s garden is one of its main attractions, where visitors can relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.
