Baiturrahman Mosque, located in the city of Jambi, Indonesia, is the oldest mosque in the province of Sumatra and is also considered to be one of the holiest places in the country for the local Muslim community. Built in 1627, the mosque is the result of the efforts of Setia Ridwan Gunung, an Islamic religious leader in the area during that time. The mosque has an Islamic architectural style and is rectangular in shape with an open courtyard situated at the entrance. The main prayer hall of the mosque features an elevated platform with a central dome in its roof which is supported by four corner columns. The walls of the prayer hall feature three tiers of muqarnas (decorative Islamic plasterwork) as well as an architrave which is decorated with floral and geometric motifs. In the back of the prayer hall, a minbar (pulpit) can be found, and behind this a mihrab (niche indicating the direction of prayer). The façade of the mosque is decorated with three tiers of stucco, and features a pointed wooden door with a calligraphic inscription. The mosque has an octagonal miniature pyramid or kiswat, which is slightly larger than the main prayer hall and provides additional space for praying. The mosque is said to also feature two cemeteries, as well as a front porch for prayer and a library. Numerous other buildings can be seen around the main mosque complex, including a madrasah (school) and several minarets.
