The Masjid Raya Banda Aceh is a beautiful and significant mosque located in the city of Banda Aceh, Indonesia. It is considered one of the oldest and most important mosques in the country. Built in the sixteenth century, it is constructed in a fusion of Islamic and Malay-Indonesian design with its domes, arches, and intricate decorations. It is constantly undergoing renovations and reconstructions to keep up with modern times. The mosque is flanked by two main towers with miniature cubicles used as mihrabs or prayer niches. Its internal features include a prayer hall, a mezzanine, spacious courtyard, a lecture room, and minaret. Surrounding the mosque are the remnants of an ancient wall fortification. The Masjid Raya Banda Aceh has a distinct architecture that includes three main entryways, a large bow-shaped prayer hall, and several other chambers. The main entrance is framed by two minarets and features an elaborately carved wooden door. The ceiling is intricately decorated with fine art and calligraphic inscriptions that are believed to date back to the 16th century. The interior of the mosque features a large prayer hall with a caved mihrab, a niche in the wall that points towards Mecca. It is decorated by a large chandelier and a large pulpit. The hall contains two grand pillars on either side of a lamp which is believed to be from the 16th century. The corner of the mosque houses a large, thick, wooden podium over which sermons and lectures are given. The mosque has been damaged several times by natural disasters and wars. In 2003, a major earthquake damaged the minarets and some of the walls. In 2005, the Indian Ocean tsunami severely damaged the mosque but it has since been restored to its former glory. Today, the Masjid Raya Banda Aceh holds special events throughout the year, including Friday sermons and Quranic recitals.
