Gereja Kemah Injil Indonesia (GKI) is a Protestant Christian church of the Reformed tradition found in the cities of Indonesia. The church was founded in 1951 by Dutch missionary Jacob John Vat in collaboration with Indonesian pastors. Its first service was held outdoors at a local stadium, although today there are over 1000 GKI congregations found throughout Indonesia. History GKI began as an indigenous Indonesian Reformed Protestant denomination, consisting of largely ethnic Chinese pastors and led by Vat. Its first Bible school was established in Jakarta in 1951 and a theological seminary in Yogyakarta four years later. The church underwent tremendous growth in the following decades, forming youth and women’s ministries and receiving full recognition from the Indonesian government in 1969. Facts Today, GKI is the largest Reformed Protestant church in Indonesia, with over 1000 congregations throughout the country and a membership of over one million worshippers. It is often described as a “mega-church” due to its sheer size and sprawl. Services GKI holds its services in small, intimate congregations and boasts a well-developed system of theological education and training. Its youth ministry is active in reaching out to young people with Christian education, while its women’s ministry works to enrich young women spiritually and emotionally. In addition, GKI runs a number of international programs and projects, including a program to plant churches in underserved regions of Asia and Africa.
