The church was founded in 1991, when the Bishop of Singapore, Rt. Rev. John Chew, visited Batam Island during his tour of the East Coast of Sumatra. He stopped over for two days and held divine services at the home of two members, and then established the congregation. The John Chew Centre, located on the grounds of the church, was established in 1997 in honor of Bishop Chew's indelible contribution to the growth and development of the church.
