Wellesley’s House at Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore, Chennai, is an ancient colonial building. It was constructed by the colonial British government in 1803. This two-storied structure has a semi-circular atrium or portico. The house is named after Richard Wellesley, the former Governor of Madras Presidency. This historical building also bears witness to the close connection between India and Britain. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.

History:

The prominent feature of the Wellesley's House is its Georgian architecture. The facade of the building is a combination of Greek, Roman and Palladian designs. Another interesting feature of the house is its construction with blue stones, which were imported from England. The building also has terracotta sculpture depicting elements of Hindu mythology. Later in 1813, it was renamed as ‘Wellesley's House’, after Richard Wellesley, the then Governor of Madras Presidency. After independence, the house was given to the Indian government by Van Gelder, the then owner of the property, who handed the property to the Indian government.
