Ajaigarh Fort and its Remains
Ajaigarh Fort is located about 60 km from the city of Gwalior in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. Ajaigarh fort is also known as ‘Vijaygarh’ in the local language. It is situated at a height of 700 feet above sea level, and overlooks the entire valley of the Betwa River. It was built in the 17th century by Maharaja Ajeet Singh of Panna, who ruled the kingdom of Bundelkhand. The fort is a crucial part of the historical heritage of Bundelkhand.

Ajaigarh Fort is renowned for its picturesque location and its surrounding valley. The fort can be accessed through a flight of steps that ascend the mountain. There are several ancient structures inside the fort, including the palace of Maharaja Ajeet Singh, and two gates, the Hathiya (elephant) pol and the Phuta (foot) darwaza. The fort also has a huge open space, the Chanderi Maidan, and two water tanks, the Chaturbhuj Tank and the Jakhrani Tank.
History
The Ajaigarh Fort was built in 1674 by Maharaja Ajeet Singh, who was a loyal follower of the great Maratha warrior Chhatrasal. It has played an important role in the history of Bundelkhand, being an impregnable fortress for many centuries. The fort was captured by the British forces in the 19th century, but was later abandoned and fell into disrepair.
