Overview:
Tiruvilangudy Siva Temple is located in Suriyur, a hamlet in the district of Tamil Nadu. It is believed to be one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated near the confluence of the rivers Cauvery and Bhavani and dates back to the 5th century. The main temple shikhara is adorned with various intricately carved sculptures, embellishing the walls of the temple. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The main deity at the temple is Shiva, and the temple also houses numerous other deities. The temple is also known for its exquisite carvings and 3000 inscriptions from the Chola period. There are five shrines within the complex, with the main one dedicated to Lord Shiva. Other shrines include those of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Nandi. The temple also has a sacred Peepal tree, which is believed to be sacred and auspicious due to its religious association. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour

The temple was constructed and dedicated to Lord Shiva by Kulothunga Chola I in the 11th century. During this period, Lord Shiva was worshipped as Kotravartheeswarar. The temple is mentioned in Sangam Literature as one of the supreme Siva Temple complexes. The Nataraja sabha and the Golden Linga are the two most prominent features in the temple complex.
