Overview:
Vaikuntaperumal Temple, Uttiramerur is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is also known as Thiruputkuzhi. This temple is located in a small village named Uttiramerur that is about 70 km from Chennai. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The main deity of Vaikuntaperumal Temple is Lord Vishnu in his form of Vaikuntaperumal, Lord of Vaikunta. It is believed that the temple was built by Pallavas in the 6th Century. The temple has various other shrines dedicated to various gods such as Shiva, Ganesha, Vishwakarma and Surya. There are various other sub shrines also within the temple complex. • The main sculpture of Vaikuntaperumal is carved from black stone and it is said to have originated from the Sarayu River. • The temple is also believed to have a secret tunnel that connects it with the Periyar River. • The temple is traditionally built , following the local architecture style, called Tamilian architecture. • The temple tank is believed to be a place where Lord Vishnu descended to redeem the souls of his devotees.
