Overview:
Somnath Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat, India. The temple is considered the holiest of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of the God Shiva. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple is constructed in Chalukya style of architecture. The temple has a simple stone linga that is said to be Swayambhu or self-manifested. The temple has been destroyed many times due to foreign invasions, and was built several times. Somnath temple stands as a symbol of national pride and immense religious importance. The temple is believed to be over 1000 years old and may even have been built by Lord Shiva himself. The temple holds great religious significance among Hindus, and is believed to be one of the 12 ‘jyotirlingas’ (divine lingas) of Lord Shiva. Throughout its history, the temple has been destroyed and rebuilt by several rulers and invaders. According to popular legend, the temple was built by Lord Shree Krishna’s grandson, Vajranabh, in Vikram Samvat year 1675.
