The Walls of the City with Gate Overview The Walls of the City with Gate is one of the most impressive and enduring fortifications of the ancient world. Built in the late 5th century BC, the wall is an ode to the engineering brilliance of ancient Greeks and Romans. The walls surround the city of Constantinople, the former capital of the Byzantine and Roman Empires. Constructed over many centuries, the wall stands as a towering reminder of the city's long and rich history. Prominent Features The most striking feature of the walls is its massive size; the outer wall stands at 18m tall and is wide enough for six horsemen to ride abreast along the top. The inner wall is even bigger, reaching heights of up to 30m tall. A ditch surrounds the walls and is filled with water to prevent attackers from scaling the side of the city. Iron gates scattered throughout the wall offer entrances to the city through which only authorized persons can pass. History The walls of Constantinople were originally constructed in the late 5th century BC by the order of Emperor Theodosius. Over the next few centuries, the wall was further fortified and expanded in order to better protect the city which had become the wealthiest and most powerful in the Roman Empire. The walls saw the city through endless sieges, invasions and wars; Constantinople was finally sacked by the Ottomans in 1453. Interesting Facts • The walls of Constantinople have stood strong and proud for over two thousand years, even surviving the devastating sack of the city by the Ottomans. • Sections of the walls are still standing today, despite numerous repairs and reconstructions over the centuries. • Because of its formidable size, the walls earned the nickname “The Shield of Christ” or “The Wall of Heaven”. • Inside the walls sits the magnificent Hagia Sophia, one of the most beautiful and historically significant churches in the world.
