The Walls of the City with Gate is one of the most impressive and enduring fortifications of the ancient world. Built in the late 5th century BC, the wall is an ode to the engineering brilliance of ancient Greeks and Romans. The walls surround the city of Constantinople, the former capital of the Byzantine and Roman Empires. Iron gates scattered throughout the wall offer entrances to the city through which only authorized persons can pass.
History
The walls of Constantinople were originally constructed in the late 5th century BC by the order of Emperor Theodosius. Over the next few centuries, the wall was further fortified and expanded in order to better protect the city which had become the wealthiest and most powerful in the Roman Empire. The walls saw the city through endless sieges, invasions and wars; Constantinople was finally sacked by the Ottomans in 1453.
