Overview:
The Venkateswara Vishnu Temple, commonly known as Tirupati Balaji Temple, is one of the oldest and most important temples for devotees of Hindu faith in India. It is located in the town of Tirupati in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Venkateswara, an incarnation of Vishnu. It is also one of the eight temples of the Divya Desam series, popularized by the Tamil Alwars and embodies the beauty of a perfect Deiva Vimana. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Venkateswara Vishnu temple architecture is characterised by its granite pyramidal towers and tall gopuram. The towers are intricately decorated with carvings of the ten incarnations of Vishnu, beautiful stucco figures, and elaborate reliefs. As the Tirumala hills contain some of the oldest rocks in India, the intricate carvings on the temple walls have withstood time. The golden sanctum sanctorum is present at the center of the temple, which sleeps in reverence within its walls. On the entrance of the temple, devotees encounter the Hindu gods of Sri Varadaraja, Sri Kasi Viswanathar and Sri Govindarajaswami. The Venkateswara Vishnu temple is believed to be constructed by Alwars in the 9th century. This can be concluded as the inscriptions at the foot of the main entrance of the temple belongs to 9th century. However, the current structure of this temple seen today is believed to be built in the 11th century by the Chola rulers.
