Tawang Mosque, located in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, is the second oldest mosque in India and the largest in the northeast. The mosque was built in the 18th century under the orders of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, with the site having been earlier used as a place for the practice of Buddhism. It is located in the valley of the Tawang River, at the village of Tawang Ani Gompa. Inside the mosque is a large gathering hall for prayer, surrounded by a long verandah and encompassed by four towers. The verandah walls have a few inscriptions of Hindu epigraphs. The mosque is renowned for its beauty and cleanliness. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.

Architecture:

The Tawang Mosque, also known as the Urgyaling Gompa, is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in the town of Tawang in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. Built in the 17th century, it is the largest Buddhist monastery in India. It is a two-storey building, with a 30 feet tall prayer hall on the first floor and living quarters for up to 700 monks on the second floor. The exterior of the mosque is built in traditional Tibetan architectural style, with intricate woodcarving and colorful murals on its walls and ceilings. The entrance is guarded by two large statues of the legendary Lord Buddha. Inside, the main prayer hall consists of three large halls, connected by a central passage. At the top of the prayer hall, a large gold-plated statue of Buddha is placed, surrounded by statues of deities from both Buddhism and Hinduism. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

Travellers who wish to reach the village by train have to get down either at Tezpur or at Bomdila railway station. How to Reach Tawang Mosque by Road: Tawang is well connected to other cities and popular tourist destinations of the state. It takes 2-3 hours to reach by road from Tezpur and about 6 hours to Bomdila. There are regular buses from Guwahati as well as Tezpur.
