Overview:
The Sun Temple, or Surya Mandir, is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to the god Surya, or the Sun in Hindu mythology. The temple is located in the town of Modhera, in the state of Gujarat, India. The temple was constructed by the Solanki dynasty in the early 11th century and is a part of the Solanki legacy of architectural achievements in Gujarat. History:
The temple is known for its unique architectural features, which includes an intricately carved stepped tank, or `Pushkarini', located in the forecourt and a pillared hall, or `mantapa', behind it. The temple complex also houses a shrine dedicated to the Moon god, Soma, as well as to Shiva and Vishnu. The temple is surrounded by a wall and gate leading up to the main shrine and its pillared hall.
