Overview:
Fort On Rock , Dindigal is one of the most important attractions in the town of Dindigal. It was built between 1605 and 1610 AD by the then King of Madura- Thirumalai Nayak. The fort is well known for its strategic location and architecture. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The fort is a square structure with four sides, each side measuring 172 metres. It has a gateway facing east on the western side and a temple dedicated to Lord Viswanatha. The walls of the fort are made of thick granite and are known for their strength and firmness. There are a few small but impressive fortifications within the fort, such as the Bhairava shrine, the Bell Tower and the step well. Fort On Rock , Dindigal was initially built by Thirumalai Nayak, the then King of Madura, between 1605 and 1610 AD. It is said that this fort was built as an expression of his power and authority. During the middle of the 18th century, the fort passed on to the hands of the British. They used it as a base for their operations in the south and as a stronghold to handle local uprisings.
