Overview:
aswara or Hilkanthanswara Mahadeva Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) in Tamil Nadu.It is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century during the period of Chola rulers and got its name from Lord Shiva's name Udayaswara, derived from the words Udayam standing for rising and Iswara meaning Lord. This temple is one of the four important temples related to Lord Shiva and located around the Cauvery river. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The main deity here is Lord Shiva referred to as Udaya Swara or Hilkanthan Swara. The temple also has several other shrines of other gods. The outer walls of the temple have beautiful stone sculptures depicting various forms of Lord Shiva like Nataraja, Tripurantaka, Gangadhara, Kalyanasundara and Chandeshwara. Interesting facts:
1. The main shrine of the temple has a five-storeyed 'Rajagopuram' or the temple entrance tower. 2. The temple has a number of stone sculptures of different gods like Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman and Nandhi Deva. 3. The main deity of the temple, Udayaswara or Hilkanthanswara Mahadeva is believed to be the form of Lord Shiva in which he appeared in front of Brahma and Vishnu. 4. The temple has a beautiful rectangular shaped pool called Rama Theertham which is believed to have been created during the time of Ramayana. 5.
