Brief History:
: Shahi Masjid, located in Kottayam, is one of the oldest mosques in India. It was constructed during the reign of Tipu Sultan, the Sultan of Mysore in late 1700s. The mosque was built for the purpose of offering prayers and paying respects to the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It is believed that Tipu Sultan built this mosque to commemorate the Battle of Malikdain, which was fought between Tipu Sultan and the East India Company's forces in 1793. The mosque is made of brick and mortar and has several domes and minarets. It is a popular attraction amongst tourists from all over the world. The Shahi Masjid in Kottayam, India is one of the oldest and most iconic mosques in the state. The main entrance has a large gate called a dargah, or sanctuary, which is made of granite. The mosque is surrounded by a long gallery with a beautiful dome made of white marble. The walls are built in a semicircular fashion and the interior is decorated with beautiful carvings in stone and stucco. The arches of the mosque are supported by four large pillars and the prayer hall is covered with a domed roof. The dome is supported by four small pillars and is topped with an onion-shaped finial. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
