Brief History:
Jama Masjid, Saharanpur India is located in the heart of the city of Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. It is the most important religious site in Saharanpur. The mosque was built in 1630 by one of the local rulers, Syed Shah Muqeem, who sought to create a place of Islamic worship in the city. The construction of the mosque was carried out by the skilled artisans of the region, and it stands testament to the architectural marvels of that era. The mosque is still used today for prayers by a sizable population of Muslim followers from the region. It is made up of three domes, two minarets and eight side buildings. The inner court of the mosque consists of a sanctuary platform, sized at 49 square feet, surrounded by a series of smaller arches and columns. The mosque is under the care of the Muslim trust, which looks after its upkeep and repairs. Its significance is seen in the fact that the annual Urs (fair) commemorating Prophet Muhammad is celebrated here. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Jama Masjid in Saharanpur is a spacious and impressive brickwork mosque built in the traditional Mughal style of architecture. A recessed arched verandah lines the facade of the prayer hall, which is topped by three large onion-shaped domes that are built with baked brick and plaster. The entrance to the main hall is decorated with four minarets with chattris (strappy pavilions) domed at their highest point. Inside, the ceiling is domed and decorated with intricate plasterwork and carvings. The columns of the hall hold arches lined with bandrabandi (panels of tiles) and the walls are decorated with ornate painting and plaster mouldings. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
