Brief History:

: Jama Masjid (Jama Mosque) is a historic mosque located near the northern part of the city of Kolkata, India. Constructed in 1830, it was commissioned by the nawab of Bengal, Muhammad Ali Mirza. It is the largest mosque in Kolkata and is considered an iconic structure in the city. The mosque stands in the heart of the old city and is worshiped by thousands of Muslims every day. This mosque is characterized by its intricate designs and geometric patterns, and features four tall minarets, columns, archways, and ornamental mosques. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.

Architecture:

The Jama Masjid in Kolkata is a historic mosque located near Bowbazar Street in the Park Street area of Kolkata. The mosque was built in 1724 by the then Nawab of Bengal Mir Jafar. The mosque has an asymmetrical, octagonal shaped prayer hall which is accessed through two staircases. The elevated platform for prayer is topped by a single onion dome and is screened by intricately carved stone balconies which are supported by decorated stone pillars. The mosque is constructed in typical Mughal style with decorative walls and arches and is made of brick and mortar. The interior walls are decorated with Quranic texts and large prayer niches are located on all four sides of the central prayer hall. The exterior walls are embellished with blue and yellow terracotta tiles. The mosque also features two minarets and a fountain near the entrance. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

By Air: The closest airport to Kolkata is the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. It is located nearly 18 kilometres away from Kolkata. Taxis are readily available to reach Jama Masjid from the airport. By Train: Kolkata is very well-connected to all major cities in India by train. The Sealdah Railway Station is the nearest to the Jama Masjid and one can hire a taxi from there to reach Jama Masjid. By Bus: Kolkata has a good network of local buses that is connected to all states of India. The nearest bus stops to Jama Masjid are Chowringhee Lane and Minto Park.
