The Jama Masjid in Kolkata is a historic mosque located near Bowbazar Street in the Park Street area of Kolkata. The mosque was built in 1724 by the then Nawab of Bengal Mir Jafar. The mosque has an asymmetrical, octagonal shaped prayer hall which is accessed through two staircases. The elevated platform for prayer is topped by a single onion dome and is screened by intricately carved stone balconies which are supported by decorated stone pillars. The mosque is constructed in typical Mughal style with decorative walls and arches and is made of brick and mortar. The interior walls are decorated with Quranic texts and large prayer niches are located on all four sides of the central prayer hall. The exterior walls are embellished with blue and yellow terracotta tiles. The mosque also features two minarets and a fountain near the entrance.
