Overview:
Motijheel Jama Mosque is a historical mosque located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is believed to have been built in the 18th century. The mosque has undergone several corrections and restoration processes throughout its history. It is the second largest mosque in Bangladesh and the largest in Old Dhaka. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The prominent features of Motijheel Jama Mosque include a large courtyard, two white marble pillars, five gates, a marble-tiled platform, five domes, and three minarets. The interior is adorned with a dazzling array of intricate carvings, stucco tracery, and colorful tiles. The large courtyard also contains a cemetery of Muslim saints and a large pool. The mosque is believed to have been built by Subahdar Shaista Khan in the 17th century. However, there is some controversy about who actually built it. In the 19th century, the mosque underwent numerous corrections and improvements, including adding a new marble interior in the 1860s. In 1956, the mosque was completely renovated.
