Kodumbalur is an ancient temple town located in the district of Pudukottai in Tamil Nadu, India. It includes the ruins of three Hindu temples that were built by the Chola dynasty from the 11th century to the 13th century CE. The Great Living Chola Temples at Kumbakonam, which are World Heritage Site listed by UNESCO, are said to have been influenced by the architecture of these three temples. The ruins of the three temples, named after their presiding deities, are Vishnugriham (dedicated to Vishnu), Thoniyappar Temple (dedicated to Shiva), and Iravatheswarar Temple (dedicated to Iravatheswarar). All are built in the Dravidian style, with a central shrine and one or two smaller shrines on each side, enclosed within a walled courtyard. Other structures at the site include mandapams (pavilions), such as the Nayanmars’ mandapam and the Nandipura-mandapam. The Antiquities Department of Tamil Nadu Government is undertaking the restoration and conservation of these ancient structures, which are a valuable part of Tamil Nadu’s cultural heritage.
